Day 17, Saturday. Time Travel – where would you go and why?
With my obsessive interest in late medieval/early modern British history, EVERYONE thinks my answer should be “Bosworth Field.”
Actually, I’d like to go back to the late 1920s/early 1930s in America, specific location not important. There are so many things I have a vague sense of from family photographs, but my brain can’t quite grasp an entire world that looks like that. I want to see it, and I want to live a slightly slower pace of life – one that doesn’t assume I’m instantly accessible via digi-pocket-device.
Also, the 20s/30s were the last time in U.S. fiction that female characters were well-rounded, regularly passed the Bechdel Test, and were expected to go off on adventures of their own. Only a few years later, we all got Feminine-Mystiqued out of business. We’re still trying to climb out of the postwar hole in that regard. (The racism in said fiction remained uniformly terrible throughout the 20th century.)
