Previous Bad Carols: E1.
Episode 2 of this year’s Bad Carols Project is a song suitable for children to sing and is also a canon that almost follows the rules of counterpoint but not really because I am lazy.
After getting into composing works for beginning band that only use five notes, I decided to try writing a relatively simple children’s song. After all, the reason so many beginning bands end up playing “Jingle Bells” and “Good King Wenceslas” and “Jolly Old St. Nicholas” is that these songs are wholly or mostly composed of just five notes.
But I’ve also been fascinated with improvising polyphony a la Tomas de Santa Maria. It crept in despite my best attempts to write a children’s carol.
Anyway, here’s a Christmas canon for your kids.
Kiddie Christmas Canon
Kids start singing, happy sound
Baby, please stay away
Like fireworks without a fuse
We sing on Christmas Day
Every heart keeps burning bright
And then it dies away
For old Saint Nick brought you a pear
And me a shining star
